Residence routes

Dubai residence visa options for a move

Dubai does not have one general relocation visa. Your lawful basis for residence determines the sponsor, evidence, duration, work rights, family options and the authority route.

What a residence visa changes

Residence permission is the legal foundation for living in the UAE for the stated period and conditions. It is distinct from a visitor entry, a work permit, an Emirates ID card and a business licence, even though those records can be connected in one process.

The UAE Government says sponsored residence can be issued for different periods, while eligible unsponsored routes can run for five or ten years. Duration is not the only comparison. Check who sponsors the residence, whether the holder may work, what evidence must remain valid, how dependants are handled, rules on time outside the UAE, renewal and what happens when the underlying job or qualifying condition ends.

For Dubai, some services are handled through GDRFA Dubai, while ICP provides federal services and identity-card infrastructure. Use the exact link supplied by the authority, employer or sponsor. A third-party sales page should not be your sole evidence for eligibility.

Standard employment residence

The standard route is employer-led. The UAE Government describes it as a normal employment visa for government and private-sector workers, with the employer making the application. The work permission and residence permission have connected but separate functions.

Ask for the legal employer name, work location, regulator, sponsor and immigration authority. A mainland private-sector employer commonly interacts with MOHRE, while a free-zone company may use its own authority for employment administration. This difference is why a checklist copied from a friend can be wrong even when both jobs are in Dubai.

Do not begin work merely because you entered as a visitor or received an informal offer. Keep the signed offer, final contract, permit records and residence documents. If a term changes, obtain the official updated record rather than relying on a message thread.

Self-sponsored and long-term routes

Green, Golden, virtual work and retirement residence remove or change the ordinary employer-sponsor relationship, but they do not remove eligibility tests. Each route is evidence-led. Qualifications, occupational level, salary or income, investment, nomination, property, insurance, work history or other conditions can apply depending on the category.

The Golden visa is an umbrella containing several categories, not a product anyone can buy on identical terms. The virtual work route is for work outside the UAE, not a substitute for a local employer's work process. Retirement residence has age, work-history and financial conditions. Green residence has its own skilled-worker, freelance and self-employed criteria.

When using a consultant, ask for the exact official category and a written map from each fee to each service. An eligibility opinion is not an approval. Pay special attention to fees described as nomination, pre-approval, licence, establishment card, medical, identity, residence, insurance and renewal.

Family-sponsored residence

An eligible resident may be able to sponsor qualifying family members. The UAE Government currently publishes relationship, income, housing and medical-fitness conditions, and warns that conditions can change. Adult dependants generally have medical-fitness steps, and civil documents may need the form of authentication requested for the service.

A dependant's residence is linked to the sponsor's record and does not automatically grant the right to take any job without the employment permission required for that situation. Ask the prospective employer what work-permit step is needed for a family-sponsored resident.

Before one adult relies entirely on the other's sponsorship, plan for job loss, separation, cancellation and the available status-change period. Those are uncomfortable questions, but they affect insurance, banking, housing and school continuity.

Common process dependencies

  1. Confirm the exact service, category, sponsor and filing authority.
  2. Obtain the current evidence list, including passport validity, photograph, insurance, civil or qualification documents and any authentication requirements.
  3. Establish whether the applicant enters on a residence-related permit, changes status inside the UAE or follows another authorised sequence.
  4. Complete medical fitness and security steps where required for the applicant's age and category.
  5. Complete residence issuance and the linked Emirates ID application through the instructed channel.
  6. Check every issued record for name, passport, sponsor, occupation where shown, dates and category.
  7. Record renewal conditions, the effect of time outside the UAE and the cancellation process before the first renewal is due.

How to compare two routes

  • Legal basis and work rights
  • Sponsor or self-sponsorship
  • Eligibility evidence that must remain true
  • Initial and recurring government, sponsor and commercial costs
  • Residence duration and renewal conditions
  • Ability and cost to sponsor family members
  • Insurance responsibility
  • Rules after job loss or loss of eligibility
  • Time allowed outside the UAE
  • Cancellation, grace period and exit or status-change plan

Do not confuse these records

When to get qualified help

Use a qualified immigration adviser or the authority when the applicant has a previous overstay, refusal, ban, criminal matter, complex family status, inconsistent documents or an urgent status deadline. Use a regulated tax or legal adviser when a self-sponsored route is tied to business structure, property or cross-border income.

Ask any adviser to state the jurisdiction, regulated status, written scope, fees, refund terms and official category relied on. Keep identity documents out of open messaging until the recipient and secure transfer method have been verified.
