UK to Dubai relocation: routes, order and first month

A British passport can make a short Dubai visit simple and still leave a relocation unfinished. Choose the legal residence route first, then sequence UK tax-exit tasks, document legalisation and the first month. This is independent information, not government, immigration or tax advice.

The short answer for a UK to Dubai move

Visitor entry and residence are different products. GOV.UK travel advice checked for the existing UK passport guide describes a free visitor or tourist visa on arrival for people travelling from the UK on a full British citizen passport, with stay and validity caveats. That arrival stamp does not authorise ordinary UAE work or settle a household.

Most people who intend to live in Dubai need a published residence basis: a UAE employer, an eligible self-sponsored category, a qualifying long-term Golden category, remote work for an overseas employer, retirement, study, or an eligible family sponsor. Confirm the live service on u.ae, then the Dubai or federal channel that will actually file the case.

Do the legal route and the cash test before you resign, sell a home, or sign a year of rent. Use the free move checklist to keep pre-move and first-month tasks in one browser file. This site is independent. We do not issue visas, process HMRC forms, or replace a qualified adviser.

A UK address, ILR, or a British passport held by someone who will not travel on that booklet does not decide the UAE rule. Use the travel document shown at the UAE border, then treat UK tax and document work as a separate workstream.

Four residence routes UK movers actually compare

SituationRoute to investigateWho usually controls the fileFirst official check
You have accepted a UAE jobStandard work residenceThe legal employer, MOHRE where the role sits in that system, then GDRFA or ICPUAE work-residence page plus the employer’s named filing channel
You will invoice clients or run licensed self-employmentGreen self-employment or another licensed route, not a marketed freelance visaMOHRE or the licensing authority, then the Green service that matches the permitFreelance vs Green comparison
You may meet an investor, property, talent or entrepreneur testGolden residence for that exact categoryThe nominating or confirming body, then GDRFA Dubai or ICPGolden Visa category hub
An eligible UAE resident will sponsor youFamily residenceThe sponsor’s income, housing and relationship evidence, then the family serviceUAE family-residence page, person by person

Remote work for an organisation outside the UAE is a fifth pattern with its own one-year Dubai service. Retirement and study are further legal bases. Do not collapse them into one package name.

Employment route: what to lock before you resign

The UAE Government states that the employer applies for the ordinary work visa. Ask for the legal employer name, free-zone or mainland location, and the employment-authority portal that will show the offer or contract. A recruiter WhatsApp thread is not that record.

Compare the written offer with basic salary, allowances, housing, insurance start dates, school support, flights, probation and any repayment clause. Then open the relocation cost calculator in AED and GBP so a sterling salary conversation is not mistaken for dirham rent.

Do not start productive work on visitor permission. If the start date sits before residence or work-permit approval, get the employer to say in writing what you may do, where you will stay, and who pays if the file is delayed.

  1. Identify the legal employer and the authority that will register the offer or contract.
  2. Save the Arabic and English offer terms the employer says will be filed.
  3. List every cost you must pay before first salary, including temporary housing.
  4. Ask how dependants are handled and which insurance starts on day one.
  5. Only then resign, give notice on a UK tenancy, or book a one-way shipment.

Freelance, Green, Golden and family in one paragraph each

A licence sold as a freelance visa is not automatically Green residence. Dubai’s Green self-employment service starts with a MOHRE self-employment permit and then applies education and financial tests. Read the comparison page before paying a formation agent.

Golden residence is an umbrella. Investor, real-estate, entrepreneur and talent categories use different evidence and sometimes a nomination. A property reservation is not an approval. Use the category hub, then the live u.ae Golden page.

Family sponsorship follows the sponsor’s valid residence, income and housing evidence, plus relationship documents that often need legalisation. Each adult can have a medical-fitness step. Build the file person by person, not as one household stamp.

If you will keep a UK employment contract and work remotely from Dubai, investigate virtual work residence separately. It is built around overseas work and a published income test, not around a Dubai job title.

A sensible order of operations

  1. Name the residence route and the official service URL you will verify next.
  2. Audit passports, name spellings and civil documents while you can still visit a UK registrar or solicitor easily.
  3. Ask the receiving UAE body which documents need a UK apostille, a translation, or further UAE attestation. Do not buy a generic bundle first.
  4. Open the GOV.UK pages on leaving the UK for tax purposes and the Statutory Residence Test. Book a qualified adviser if you have UK income, property, pensions or a company.
  5. Build landing cash and a normal monthly AED budget. Convert to GBP only as a second view.
  6. Keep UK housing flexible until residence, school places and a written tenancy you understand are real.
  7. Travel with temporary accommodation and a private task list. Complete medical, residence and Emirates ID steps in the order issued for the case.
  8. Register the tenancy through Ejari before ordinary DEWA tenant move-in, then open resident banking on the bank’s own checklist.

The interactive checklist follows this order without collecting passport numbers or bank details.

UK tax-exit pointers, not advice

UAE residence does not by itself end UK tax residence. GOV.UK’s page on tax if you leave the UK to live abroad, checked on 14 September 2026, says you must tell HMRC if you are leaving to live abroad permanently, going to work abroad full-time for at least one full tax year, or you are a foreign national leaving the UK.

How you tell HMRC depends on whether you usually complete a Self Assessment return. The same GOV.UK page says people who do not usually complete a return use form P85, and should include parts of a P45 when they have one. People who usually complete Self Assessment can tell HMRC through the residence section of that return. Completing P85 is not a substitute for understanding the Statutory Residence Test.

HMRC’s RDR3 Statutory Residence Test guidance, updated 11 June 2026 and checked on 14 September 2026, explains how to work out residence for each UK tax year. Spending 183 or more days in the UK in a tax year makes you UK resident under that guidance. Other automatic overseas tests, automatic UK tests and the sufficient ties test can still apply when the day count is lower. Split-year treatment is a further, condition-heavy topic.

Track days, homes, family location and work ties from the day you start the move. Keep this site out of that calculation. We will not tell you that you have left the UK for tax purposes.

Attestation and UK document legalisation

UAE residence, school and family files often ask for civil documents: marriage and birth certificates, degree evidence, sometimes police certificates. The receiving body decides the format. A UK apostille is only the UK Legalisation Office confirming a signature or seal it recognises.

GOV.UK’s legalisation overview, checked on 14 September 2026, describes paper apostilles and e-Apostilles applied for online. Fees on that page include £45 for a standard paper apostille plus postage, and £35 for an e-Apostille, with limits on which documents can be electronic. Ask the UAE school, sponsor or immigration channel whether it accepts an e-Apostille before you choose.

After a UK apostille, some files still need translation or further attestation for use in the UAE. Ask the live GDRFA, ICP or receiving-organisation checklist. Do not pay an agent who will not name each government step and the refund if a step is refused.

Check names, dates and parent details across passports and certificates before you legalise anything. A mismatch found in Dubai is slower to fix than a correction at the UK issuing office.

First 30 days after a UK departure

Arrive with lawful status for the residence process, temporary housing, and enough accessible cash outside a new UAE account. Follow the employer or authority sequence for medical fitness, residence and Emirates ID. ICP describes residence issuance as linked to an Emirates ID application.

Do not treat a UK driving licence as automatically valid for resident driving. RTA publishes the current exchange service and eligible-country conditions. Confirm the live list for your licence-issuing country.

Register a long-term tenancy through Dubai Land Department’s Ejari service before the ordinary DEWA tenant move-in. Keep insurance evidence for every person who will live in the home.

Re-read the first 30 days guide and tick the same milestones in the interactive checklist. Date them in the lite planner only when you have a real appointment or target, not a blog’s day-three schedule.

Questions people ask before they book the flight

Can I job-hunt in Dubai on a British visitor arrival? Visitor permission is for a visit. Looking around is not the same as starting work. If you will take a UAE role, the employer-led process is the route to verify.

Does ILR or a UK visa help at the UAE border? Only if the UAE rule you are using expressly recognises that document. For a British citizen travelling on a full British citizen passport, start with the visitor guide. For any other passport, use that nationality’s official checker.

Should I close UK bank accounts first? Often no. You may still need them for residual salary, pensions, property and HMRC. Ask your bank and adviser what they need to keep the account lawful after you move.

Is Dubai tax-free, so I can ignore HMRC? No. The UAE has its own tax framework, and UK residence is a separate legal test. Read the official UAE taxation overview and the GOV.UK SRT guidance, then get advice if money is material.

Independent-site boundary

Dubai Visa Process is a private information service. We are not GDRFA, ICP, the UAE Government, HMRC or a visa agency. Nothing here is a personal eligibility decision, tax residence conclusion or guarantee of approval.
