Dubai work visa and employment process

For an ordinary UAE job, the employer leads the work-permit and residence process. Your job offer, contract, permit and residence are connected records, not four names for the same document.

Who applies for a Dubai work visa?

The UAE Government states that the employer applies for the standard work visa. For a private-sector job, the published employment sequence starts with a formal job offer, then the employment contract, work permit and work residence process. An employee should be able to identify the legal employer, sponsor, regulator and filing channel.

Mainland private-sector roles commonly fall within the MOHRE system. Free-zone and government roles may use different employment administration. Ask the employer to name the route instead of assuming that every Dubai contract can be verified in the same portal.

A recruiter or employer should not tell you that a tourist or visit visa is permission to start ordinary work. Do not hand over cash for an unnamed 'work visa'. Request an itemised explanation of any lawful cost and who is responsible for it.

The process in plain English

  1. Receive the formal written job offer and identify the legal employer.
  2. Read the offer before signing. The UAE Government says the private-sector offer should describe both parties' rights and obligations and be in Arabic and English, with an additional language in the published circumstances.
  3. The employer obtains the required work-permit approval through the system that applies to the company.
  4. Follow the authorised entry or in-country status process. Do not improvise a border run or status change from an old forum post.
  5. Complete medical fitness and identity/residence steps as instructed for the case.
  6. Review the registered employment contract and confirm it matches the accepted offer and lawful amendments.
  7. Check the residence and Emirates ID records when issued, then store renewal and cancellation information.

Check the job offer before relocating

The job title and monthly figure are not enough. Compare legal employer name, role, work location, start date, contract term, probation, notice, working hours or pattern, weekly rest, leave, basic salary, allowances, commission terms, medical cover, flights, relocation support and dependent benefits.

Separate basic salary from allowances. A package may use one large total while housing, transport or another allowance is conditional. Ask when each element is paid and what evidence is needed. If accommodation is provided, ask who signs the tenancy, who pays utilities and what happens when employment ends.

Check every repayment clause. A relocation advance, joining bonus, training cost or temporary accommodation payment may have conditions if you leave early. Do not rely on a recruiter saying a clause is never enforced. Ask for amendments in the written offer and official contract.

Verify the official record

MOHRE provides an employment offer and contract inquiry for records in its system. Use the verified ministry domain and enter personal details only there. If the employer is in a free zone, ask for the correct authority verification route.

The UAE Government says the final employment contract should be based on the accepted offer and that changes require consent within the law and ministry approval where applicable. Save the version you signed and compare it with the registered record.

A polished PDF, logo or company email is not enough to prove the job exists. Independently find the company's official contact details, verify the person recruiting you and be cautious if the process centres on urgent personal payments, crypto, gift cards or transfers to an individual.

Before you resign or book the flight

  • The legal employer and authorised signatory have been verified independently.
  • The signed offer is complete and no important promise remains verbal.
  • The responsible employment authority and immigration route are named.
  • You know which approvals are complete and which are still conditional.
  • The employer has explained the entry or status process and realistic temporary-housing need.
  • Passport, qualifications and civil documents match and any required authentication is underway.
  • Employee and dependent insurance start dates are clear.
  • The household can fund the move if salary, residence, banking or reimbursement takes longer than hoped.
  • There is a written plan if the role is withdrawn before arrival or during probation.

After arrival

Follow the employer's authorised schedule for medical fitness, biometrics or identity steps, residence issuance and contract completion. Check names, passport number, sponsor and dates on each record. Report a mismatch immediately through the employer and proper authority channel.

Do not give the employer the only copy of your passport or signed documents. There can be legitimate short handling for an application, but you should understand why, who holds it and when it will be returned. Store copies securely and avoid leaving full identity images in ordinary chat history.

Once the employment and residence records are complete, revisit housing. Test the real commute at the relevant time before signing a long contract. A cheaper home can become an expensive daily journey in time, tolls, fuel, taxi fares or school transport.

If the job ends

Employment termination can trigger connected immigration, insurance, accommodation and banking tasks. Ask for the cancellation documents and confirm the current time allowed to change status or leave. Do not calculate a deadline from an old generic grace-period article because periods can differ by category and change.

Review final pay, unused leave, benefits, return travel, loans, utility accounts and dependant residence. If there is a dispute, use MOHRE or the authority responsible for the employment rather than a visa broker. Seek qualified advice early when a deadline or large sum is involved.
