Remote work residence

Dubai remote work visa: requirements and move plan

Dubai's virtual work residence is a renewable one-year, self-sponsored route for people working remotely for an organisation outside the UAE. The current Dubai service requires proof of that overseas work, income of at least US$3,500 a month and the stated residence documents.

This page does not cover: taking a job with a UAE employer, assuming client work is automatically permitted, or treating a foreign employer's approval as UAE residence approval.

The route in one minute

The official UAE portal describes a one-year virtual work visa for a foreigner employed outside the UAE. It is self-sponsored, so there is no UAE employer acting as the ordinary residence sponsor. GDRFA Dubai describes the corresponding residence permit as renewable, provided the applicant continues to meet the conditions.

The central distinction is where the work sits. The Dubai service is built around remote work for an organisation outside the country. It is not the normal route for joining a Dubai company, and it should not be presented to a local employer as a substitute for the work permit and residence process that applies to a UAE job.

Approval is still an immigration decision. Meeting a salary figure or buying insurance does not guarantee residence. Use the official Dubai service for the application and answer any request for additional evidence through that verified channel.

Remote worker, freelancer or UAE employee?

A job can feel remote while belonging to a different legal route. Someone employed by a company outside the UAE, paid under that overseas employment and allowed to perform the role remotely is the clearest fit for virtual work residence. Get the employer's position in writing before moving, including any limits on working from another country.

A freelancer or company owner may need licensing, Green residence, business and tax analysis that an employee checklist does not answer. Do not assume that calling an activity remote removes UAE licensing rules, or that a foreign company can ignore payroll, corporate presence, data, insurance and employment questions created by your location.

A person accepting employment with a UAE entity should use the employer-led route. If a group has both foreign and UAE entities, identify which legal entity signs the contract, pays the salary and receives the work. Brand names are not enough.

Documents to prepare before the application

  • A passport copy and personal photograph that meet the current service specification.
  • A signed employment contract or employer letter identifying the overseas legal entity and remote arrangement.
  • A salary certificate showing the required monthly income in a way that can be reconciled to payroll and bank evidence.
  • Recent payslips and bank statements if requested by the application route.
  • Health insurance evidence valid for the UAE and suitable for the intended residence period.
  • Civil and family documents if separate dependant applications are planned.
  • A private record of the official service, submission receipt and payment breakdown.
  • A note of which files contain sensitive identity, employment, health or financial data so they are shared only through a verified route.

Application sequence

  1. Confirm that the work is genuinely for an organisation outside the UAE and that the employer permits the arrangement.
  2. Open the current GDRFA virtual work residence service and obtain its exact document list for your circumstances.
  3. Check passport, salary, contract, bank, insurance and name details against one another before uploading anything.
  4. Establish whether the application begins from outside the UAE or uses an authorised in-country process, then follow that route.
  5. Submit through GDRFA's digital channel or a verified Amer or Customer Happiness Centre route.
  6. Complete medical fitness, Emirates ID and residence steps in the order issued for the case.
  7. Check the residence category, name, passport details and dates as soon as the records are issued.
  8. Calendar insurance and residence renewal well before expiry, and keep fresh proof that the overseas work and income still qualify.

Fees and timing without a false total

The GDRFA page checked on 9 September 2026 lists an AED 200 residence permit fee, AED 10 Knowledge Dirham, AED 10 Innovation Dirham and AED 20 delivery. It also lists an AED 500 charge for an application inside the country. These lines are not a universal total, and they do not include every possible entry, status, medical, identity, insurance, centre or case-specific cost.

The same page gives an expected completion time of 48 hours. Read that as a service estimate after the required file is ready, not as a promise that a move, medical process, Emirates ID, family application or bank setup will finish in two days.

Before paying an adviser, request an itemised quote that names each government service and each commercial charge. Ask what happens if the authority requests more evidence or refuses the application. A fast-track label from a seller does not change the authority's decision.

Plan the household, not only the visa

A one-year residence changes the risk profile of a tenancy. Compare the rent term, cheque schedule, deposit, agency charge, Ejari, utilities, cooling, furniture and early-exit clause with the date on the residence and the certainty of renewal. Temporary housing can be cheaper than signing the wrong contract quickly.

For a partner or children, check the current family sponsorship route separately. Do not assume that a reference to family access means every relationship, age, income, insurance and document condition is automatically met. School places, fees and residence evidence also need their own timetable.

Budget for medical insurance as a resident, not merely a travel policy sold for entry. Check cover for regular treatment, medicine, maternity, mental health and dependants before choosing a plan on price alone.

Tax, employer and business questions

Living in Dubai can affect tax residence, payroll, social security, permanent-establishment risk and employment obligations outside the UAE. The visa does not decide those questions. Tell the employer where you will work and obtain cross-border advice for the countries connected to you and the company.

Track days, homes, family location, duties, clients and business travel from the start. A person can hold UAE residence while retaining tax duties elsewhere. People whose home system continues to tax or require filings after a move need advice tailored to that system.

If you sell services directly, manage a company or work for several clients, check whether the activity needs a UAE licence and whether UAE corporate tax or VAT applies. Do this before invoicing from Dubai, not after a bank or authority asks what the work is.

When another route may fit better

Age, work history and financial threshold metRetirement residenceThe legal basis is retirement rather than ongoing remote employment

Reasons to pause

  • The employer will not confirm that the job may be performed from the UAE.
  • The salary certificate, contract, payslips and bank receipts conflict without explanation.
  • The proposed work includes a UAE employer or local activity that the seller has not analysed.
  • An adviser promises approval or asks for payment to an individual account.
  • The insurance does not clearly cover UAE residence or the intended medical needs.
  • The household budget relies on immediate banking, a fixed approval date or guaranteed renewal.
  • You are told to cancel existing residence before the new route or permission is confirmed.
