Who can sponsor family?

The UAE Government states that employers and employees with valid UAE residence can sponsor eligible family members when the current conditions are met. Its published general threshold is AED 4,000 monthly salary or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, regardless of job title. Conditions can change, so confirm the live service before relying on that figure.

The current page describes sponsorship for a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under the published age condition and children with special needs. Green residence holders have additional published family provisions. Parents and other relatives can involve separate terms, deposits or evidence.

The sponsor's own residence must be valid. A dependant's residence generally cannot run beyond the sponsor's, and cancellation or expiry of the sponsor's record affects the family. Plan that dependency before the move, especially when one adult gives up work or the family commits to school and housing contracts.

Civil documents need early attention

Marriage and birth documents are often the slow part because several organisations can be involved. Ask the immigration authority for the current authentication and translation requirements that apply to the issuing country and document. Do not buy a generic 'attestation package' until the provider names every step and the receiving authority.

Check names, dates, places and parent details across passports and certificates. If records differ for a valid reason, ask what supporting evidence the authority requires. Do not alter a scan or rely on an informal translation.

School admission may request some of the same documents in a different form. Keep a document matrix showing the receiving organisation, required format, original location and safe copy, rather than sending a master folder to every intermediary.

Medical fitness and insurance

The official family residence page says sponsored family members aged 18 and over must undergo the required medical-fitness examination at an approved UAE health centre. That is an immigration medical step, not a full health assessment and not a substitute for insurance.

Health insurance is mandatory for Dubai residents. Confirm whether the employee's company covers only the employee or also spouse and children. If the sponsor must arrange dependent cover, compare network, co-payments, pre-existing-condition handling, maternity, medicines and start date before residence deadlines.

A family with ongoing treatment should plan records, lawful medication supply and the transition to a local clinician. Check UAE medicine rules and any approval requirement before travel. Do not carry someone else's prescription or a large supply based on internet reassurance.

A practical family sequence

  1. Secure the main sponsor's residence basis and obtain the current dependent service checklist.
  2. Audit passports and relationship documents while still in the country of issue, when corrections and authentication may be easier.
  3. Confirm sponsor income and accepted housing evidence. Do not assume temporary accommodation satisfies a housing condition.
  4. Plan the authorised entry or in-country status process separately for each family member.
  5. Complete adult medical-fitness steps and insurance in the order the service requires.
  6. Submit residence and Emirates ID applications through the correct Dubai route.
  7. Check issued names, dates, sponsor links and delivery details.
  8. Record renewal, travel-outside-UAE and cancellation rules for the whole family.

Budget beyond the visa fee

  • Civil-document issue, translation and authentication
  • Entry or status services for each dependant
  • Medical fitness for applicable adults
  • Emirates ID and residence service components
  • Health insurance for every dependant
  • Temporary accommodation while documents and housing are completed
  • Housing deposit, rent schedule, Ejari, utilities and furnishing
  • School application, deposit, tuition, transport, uniform and supplies
  • Flights and shipment
  • Renewal costs and an emergency fund if the sponsor's job ends

School timing can control the move

Contact schools before choosing a home. Ask about curriculum, likely year group, place availability, assessment, support needs, start date and the exact evidence needed for an offer. A wait-list position is not an admission.

Use KHDA's school directory and the selected school's current School Fees Fact Sheet. Compare mandatory fees and optional costs such as transport. Ask how a deposit is treated if residence, relocation or a place falls through.

Map both school and workplace journeys at the times they will actually happen. A family can save rent and lose the saving to two long commutes, tolls, fuel, taxis or school transport.

If the sponsor's situation changes

The UAE Government notes that family residence is linked to the sponsoring resident and describes a period after cancellation or expiry in which dependants must regularise status. Do not use a remembered number as a deadline. Confirm the current period for the category and the date recorded on each file.

Create a contingency plan for job loss, separation, death or a delayed renewal. Identify who can access funds and documents, how insurance continues, what the tenancy and school contracts require, and which qualified professional to contact.

Never leave a dependant's immigration record unresolved because the main applicant is negotiating with an employer. Employment rights and immigration status may have different processes and deadlines.

When the ordinary checklist is not enough

Ask the authority or a qualified family and immigration adviser about stepchildren, guardianship, adoption, custody restrictions, a missing parent's consent, unregistered marriages, inconsistent civil records, adult dependants outside the ordinary category or prior immigration issues.

The safest adviser will name the rule, explain uncertainty, document the fee and avoid approval guarantees. Verify the adviser's identity before sharing children's passports or civil records.
