Passport guide
Dubai visa for US citizens: regular passport guide
The U.S. Department of State says a US citizen using a qualifying regular, non-emergency passport may receive a no-fee visitor visa on arrival for personal travel of 30 days or less. Passport validity, passport type and the document's recorded sex marker matter.
This page does not cover: emergency, diplomatic or official passports, stays over 30 days, work, study, residence or people with an unresolved UAE immigration record.
The common short-visit position
For personal travel lasting 30 days or less, the current U.S. Department of State destination page says an eligible US citizen with a regular passport can obtain visitor permission on arrival without a fee. That is an arrival route, not an advance tourist-visa application.
The UAE controls admission. An airline can also refuse boarding when the travel document does not meet the current rule. Check both the UAE eligibility information and the operating airline shortly before departure, even if you have visited Dubai before.
This rule follows the passport presented at the border. A US resident who travels on another country's passport must check the rule for that passport instead.
Passport checks that change the answer
| Travel document | Published US guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Regular, non-emergency US passport | May use the short personal-visit arrival route when all current conditions are met | Confirm validity, document details and trip length before travel |
| Emergency passport | The destination guidance says the UAE does not accept the specified US emergency passport for entry | Contact the passport issuer, UAE embassy and airline before booking or travelling |
| Diplomatic or official passport | Advance permission is required under the published US guidance | Use the official government travel and clearance route |
| Passport without an accepted M or F marker | The destination guidance reports that boarding or entry will be refused | Seek current case-specific advice before making travel arrangements |
Validity and the 30-day limit
The destination page states that the passport must remain valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry and have a page available for the entry stamp. Treat six months as a minimum check, not a reason to travel with a damaged or doubtful passport.
The 30-day visitor route does not become a longer permission because a return flight changes. The U.S. Department of State says an extension may be requested but remains at the discretion of UAE immigration officials. If the trip needs more time, investigate the correct route before relying on an extension.
Work, study and relocation are separate
Arrival as a visitor does not authorise employment or study. A person moving for a UAE job should have the employer identify the work permit, residence process and authority before starting work. Someone relocating through family, business, remote work, retirement or another category should verify that residence route independently.
Do not let a simple visitor route hide the rest of a move. Residence can involve medical fitness, Emirates ID, health insurance, housing and sponsor-led steps that do not apply to an ordinary holiday.
A final check before flying
- Open the current UAE eligibility page and the U.S. Department of State destination page.
- Confirm the passport is regular, non-emergency, undamaged and valid for the required period.
- Check the recorded sex marker and passport page availability against the current published conditions.
- Confirm the visit will remain within the permission granted at the border and will not involve work or study.
- Read the current US travel advisory and airline operating information separately from the visa rule.
- After entry, read the immigration stamp or digital record and use that recorded permission for every date calculation.
