Passport guide
Dubai visa for South African citizens: two paths
A South African ordinary passport is not described as visa-free for every traveller. The UAE Embassy in Pretoria says visa on arrival is available from 25 June 2026 when that passport, and accompanying family, also hold a listed foreign residence permit.
This page does not cover: assuming every South African resident abroad qualifies, or treating embassy news as a boarding guarantee.
The Pretoria embassy announcement
On 29 June 2026 the UAE Embassy in Pretoria published that, effective 25 June 2026, the UAE will grant visas on arrival to ordinary passport holders from South Africa and their accompanying family members who hold valid residence permits issued by the United States, a European Union member state, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Singapore, the Republic of Korea, Canada or New Zealand.
The wider UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs notice of 25 June 2026 places South Africa in the same six-country group and, through ICP, describes 14-day or 60-day arrival visas, a one-time extension only for the 14-day product, an AED 50 daily overstay fine after the permitted period, and total issuance fees of AED 100 or AED 250.
Travelling from Johannesburg or Cape Town on a South African passport, without one of those foreign residence permits, is not the route described in the embassy announcement. That traveller should verify an advance application channel.
Choose the path that matches the documents
| Your documents | Official text to test | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary SA passport plus a named foreign residence permit | Pretoria embassy announcement and the 25 June 2026 MOFA/ICP notice | That every Schengen visa, as opposed to residence, is enough |
| Ordinary SA passport only | UAE eligibility page plus a verified airline or provider channel | That visa on arrival will be offered at the counter |
| Accompanying family | The embassy text covers family who also hold the qualifying residence | That children automatically inherit a parent's third-country residence |
| Diplomatic or other special passports | Not covered by the ordinary-passport announcement | Case-specific official advice |
Unverified extras this page leaves out
Some commercial summaries add extra tests such as 180 days of uninterrupted residence or 90 days of remaining permit validity. Those figures do not appear in the Pretoria embassy paragraph we cite. If an airline or ICP screen states them, follow that live instruction and record the date. This site will not promote them as embassy rules.
Likewise, we do not publish a South Africa-specific government fee as if it were official. Use the itemised quote from the channel that will file the application.
Advance applications
- Identify whether the file will sit with GDRFA Dubai or ICP.
- Use a provider whose legal name and licence you can check.
- Match names and passport numbers character for character.
- Keep a written split of government fee, VAT and service charge.
- Ask where official status will be visible after submission.
Verification sequence
- Read the live Pretoria embassy note and the UAE eligibility page.
- If you hold foreign residence, write the issuing country, permit type and expiry.
- Ask the operating airline whether it will board on that combination.
- If not, arrange a tourist visa through a verified channel before buying non-refundable extras.
- After any arrival permission is issued, read the duration and extension rule on that document.
- Work and residence remain separate processes.
