Dubai visa for German citizens: biometric passport

The German Foreign Office currently says German citizens need no visa for tourism, unpaid business visits or family visits of at most 90 days within 180 days when they travel on a valid biometric passport. Paid or unpaid work during that stay is not allowed.

Visa-free short stays

The German Embassy in Abu Dhabi's travel advice, checked on 11 September 2026, states that German citizens do not need a visa to enter the UAE for tourism, business without taking up work, or visits, for a maximum of 90 days within 180 days, when they use a valid biometric passport.

The same text says the authorities may extend a stay beyond 90 days. An extension is a separate official decision. Do not plan a six-month holiday on the hope that an extension will be granted.

Living in Germany, or holding a German residence title, does not make a traveller a German citizen. Use the passport that will be shown at the UAE border.

Passport type and residents

The advice tells travellers they need a regular biometric passport, including where an express replacement is required. People who already hold UAE residence have extra warnings: the embassy says residents need a regular biometric passport to enter, and that leaving on a passport substitute or provisional passport is only possible after the residence record has been cancelled by the competent immigration authority. That cancellation is not done at the airport and is described as taking at least 24 hours.

If you hold Emirates ID or UAE residence, do not experiment with a provisional travel document at the departure desk. Ask GDRFA or ICP how the current residence record must be closed or updated.

Validity and other checks

The German Embassy page also says travel documents must still have at least six months' validity at entry for stays of up to 90 days, and that the UAE border will refuse a document that falls short. Confirm the airline's version of that rule for your ticket.

Medication, driving and cultural rules sit on the same embassy advice and are separate from the visa question. Read those sections if they apply to the trip.

Before travel

  1. Open the live German Embassy UAE travel page and the official UAE eligibility checker.
  2. Confirm the passport is a valid biometric German passport, not a substitute you have not checked.
  3. If you are a UAE resident, confirm you will also enter and leave on a regular biometric passport.
  4. Count previous UAE days in the relevant 180-day period.
  5. Do not accept work, paid or unpaid, on this visitor route.
  6. After arrival, read the stamp or digital permission and keep those dates.
