Passport guide
Dubai visa for Australian citizens: passport guide
Smartraveller currently says Australian passport holders are eligible for a tourist visa on arrival in Abu Dhabi and Dubai when the passport has more than six months' validity. Incomplete birth dates, XX gender markers and single-name passports are refused.
This page does not cover: diplomatic or official passports, incomplete passport data fields, an X or U sex marker treated as guaranteed entry, work or residence.
What Smartraveller currently says
The Australian Government destination page checked on 11 September 2026 states that Australian passport holders are eligible for a tourist visa on arrival. It also sends travellers to the UAE federal e-government portal for visa information that can change at short notice.
Smartraveller does not, on the wording we checked, publish a single permitted-stay figure for that arrival visa. Confirm the stay granted at the border and on the current UAE official page. Do not copy a 30-day or 90-day number from an undated blog.
Australian residence is not the same as an Australian passport. Someone living in Australia on another nationality must check that nationality instead.
Passport data that can end the trip
| Document issue | Smartraveller wording checked | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary Australian passport, more than six months valid | Eligible for tourist visa on arrival in Abu Dhabi and Dubai | Still confirm airline and UAE live rules |
| Birth date shown as XX in any part | Entry or transit will be refused | The booklet must show day, month and year numerically |
| Gender shown as XX | Entry will be refused | The same advisory also warns that X or U sex markers can block entry or transit |
| Only one name field completed | Entry will be refused | The passport needs both a first name and a last name |
| Diplomatic or official passport | A visa is required before travel | Use the official clearance route |
| Emergency passport after a lost booklet | Residents who lose a passport overseas are told to contact a UAE embassy before applying | Do not treat an emergency booklet as an ordinary arrival document |
Validity and boarding checks
Smartraveller repeats that many countries, including for transit, require at least six months' passport validity. The arrival route described for Australian passports is tied to more than six months' validity. Airlines often apply that test at check-in.
The same advisory says entry and exit conditions can change quickly and that travellers should contact a UAE embassy or consulate, or the local authorities, for the latest visa and residency detail.
Work is not included
A tourist arrival permission does not become a work or residence right because a job offer appears after landing. The employer-led work process and other residence categories are documented on the moving-to-Dubai guides.
If the itinerary is a stopover, confirm whether you will pass UAE immigration. Airside transit and an entry stamp are different facts.
Before you fly
- Read the live Smartraveller UAE page and the official UAE visa-eligibility page.
- Check that the passport is ordinary, machine-readable and valid for more than six months after entry.
- Confirm the printed birth date, names and sex marker contain no XX placeholders and that both name fields are complete.
- Ask the operating airline whether it will board a limited-validity or emergency booklet, especially after a lost passport.
- Record the stay printed or issued at the border; do not rely on a remembered number from a previous trip.
- If you intend to work or reside, verify that route before treating this page as sufficient.
